Different photosynthetic plants consist of several pigments. They play a major role in carrying out photosynthesis. Video 1 demonstrates the presence of different chlorophyll pigments present in green plants using paper chromatography. Chromatography is a technique used for separating different components in a mixture, solution, or compound. In the video, chromatography is used to differentiate between the different types of chlorophyll pigment present in spinach. Using the technique we can observe that spinach consists of chlorophyll A and chlorophyll B. Chlorophyll A appears yellowish green while chlorophyll B appears green. In addition to that, yellow-orange color, pigments appear which indicate the presence of carotenes and xanthophylls.
